Cape Verdean basketball player Edy Walter Tavares, playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Summer League, was the Cavalier’s highest scorer in their game against the Milwaukee Bucks. The 25 year old player is 7’3″ (2.21m) tall and has a ‘wingspan’ of some 7’9″ (2.36m); he was born on the island of Maio, Cape Verde.
A gift from São João da Madeira a city in the Norte region of Portugal has recently arrived in Maio. The delivery includes sports equipment, school equipment and toys. The intention being to improve sporting facilities and activities on the island. The links between São João da Madeira and Maio started in the 1990’s.
Beaches abound in Cape Verde, and many are often almost deserted. This one is accessible from within Stella Maris village in Vila do Maio on the island of Maio. The small beach is usually deserted and therefore it is a lovely, secluded spot to enjoy the beautiful weather and take a refreshing dip in the sea. It is also possible to walk around the rocks below Stella Maris.
This happy scene was taken on the main beach (Bitxe Rotxa) in Vila do Maio on the lovely island of Maio, Cape Verde. This was one of the occasions when the beautiful beach wasn’t almost deserted!
Maio is a lovely island, quiet and the perfect place to get away from it all. This is the main street that runs along the seafront and out towards the airport. Traffic is almost unheard of as you can see. The colourful houses make this an attractive little town and together with the lovely beaches makes this a great place for that peaceful holiday.
If you are travelling in Cape Verde between 16 June and 31 July this year, Binter CV are offering more than 8000 tickets for domestic flights for just 1000CVE (€10), fees not included. To take advantage of this offer you need to book your tickets between 2 and 8 May. Binter CV will be serving all the islands in the Cape Verde archipelago that have airports from 16 June. For more information: www.binter.cv
Binter CV has now announced that it will commence flights to Maio and São Nicolau in June. This will mean that from the middle of June Binter CV will be flying to all the airports within Cape Verde. This is good news and it is hoped that the schedules will be published soon and that they will not fly on the same days as the existing TACV flights.
We understand that Binter CV have been in Maio taking promotional photographs. Does this mean that they are planning to add Maio to their domestic flights within Cape Verde? We certainly hope so, as this lovely island would benefit from more flights than at present. Watch this space.
Photo of the week – fun on the beach. Local children have great fun using the rocks and the beach. They may not have many possessions, but the beautiful natural environment provides them with endless fun and keeps them fit.
