On 30 September we reported on the Spokes and Dreams initiative started by Dave Savage. The idea being to provide bicycles for children in Cape Verde so that they could use them to get to school. We can now report that this initiative has raised £3,500 (approximately €4,000). In addition 15 good quality secondhand bicycles have been donated. These bikes have been serviced by the Decathlon store in Southampton. It is hoped that about 30 bikes plus some cycling gear and helmets will be shipped to Cape Verde soon. This will make a lot of difference to the children that receive the bikes. Some kids have long walks to school and then home again. This means that they arrive tired and consequently do not learn properly. The bicycles will be distributed by the Cape Verde Cycling federation.
