It is hoped that this year Cape Verde will receive a certificate to confirm that the country is free of malaria. The country has not recorded any local cases of this disease for four years. This was confirmed by the Minister of Health recently on the ‘World Malaria Day’. It is therefore hoped that this certification with be issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO) later this year.

Malaria is a disease caused by being bitten by an infected mosquito. People can become ill after just one bite and in some cases it causes death. It is an infection that is common in tropical parts of the world including Africa. The fact that there have been no cases in Cape Verde for four years is great news.
