Low covid numbers in Cape Verde

We have tried not to keep on mentioning Covid-19, because most of us are fed up with the statistics and constant references to it. However, we felt that sharing the good news about Cape Verde warranted us breaking our covid silence. The cases of Covid in Cape Verde have reduced very considerably in the past week or so. The most recent figures from the Cape Verde government (14/2/22) indicate only 29 active cases across the whole nine islands. This is amazingly low and an excellent result for the country. The island of Maio is even recording zero cases at the time of writing.

In addition, almost 90% of the population of Cape Verde are now vaccinated. Approximately 85% with the first dose and 72% with a second dose. Almost 70% of the vaccines supplied through the Covax arrangement and from other countries has now been administered.

All of this is very good news for a country so heavily reliant on tourism. Many tourists travel to Cape Verde via Lisbon with TAP or Cabo Verde Airlines. To make things easier, Portugal has recently reduced its requirements for people entering or transiting the country. A digital Covid Vaccination certificate, such as the EU pass indicating either vaccination, or recovery from Covid, is now all that is required. So, this is a very good time to escape from the cold weather in much of Europe and the USA and enjoy the warmth and the sunshine in Cape Verde.
