In May we reported that the government of Cape Verde had introduced legislation to ban the advertising of cigarettes and introduce a new smoking ban. That ban comes into force on 23 October. From that date smoking is banned in restaurants, bars, clubs and public buildings. For people living in Cape Verde it is also banned in workplaces. It is understood that the ban also applies to external areas less than 3m from an enclosed space. Also, all tobacco produces must contain health warnings and pictures to show the effects of smoking on the body. This will bring Cape Verde into line with most European countries where a smoking ban of this type is common.
