Sunset at Stella Maris Maio Cape Verde

Stella Maris Villa Maio

Snapshot

Stella Maris villa Maio has three bedrooms, together with tropical garden and perched on a cliff top with sea views. There is a shared infinity pool together with lovely beaches. The house is comfortable, spacious, secluded, tranquil and unspoilt…

Inside the property

The property sleeps a maximum of six people and comprises three double bedrooms, one bathroom, a kitchen dining area, a large open plan living room and two outside terraces (One for sun together with one for shade). The bedrooms comprise one double with sea views (as seen in photo), one with two single beds, together with a mezzanine that has two single beds, ideal for kids (Total 6 beds + 1 double sofa bed). The kitchen is fully equipped with everything needed for self-catering. For outside dining on the terrace there is an additional table with four chairs.

In the large open plan living room there is a double sofa bed, two sofas, and an LG smart TV.  The TV has satellite channels, internet, Skype, Facebook (+ other apps). There is also a bluetooth sound bar, which can play music from your bluetooth device and also works with the TV.  We also have totally unlimited WIFI (optional extra). The house has fan cooling in all rooms and windows have fly screens.

Outside the property

There is a large covered terrace for shade, which is in addition to a separate sun terrace. There are two soft sun loungers, two hammocks and the private garden has a mix of tropical plants. Due to its location and aspect it is sheltered from the prevailing trade winds so it is warm, even in the winter months. It is also exceptionally quiet because no traffic is allowed in the development. There is private access to a small-secluded sandy beach* accessible by villa owners down steps built into the cliff about fifty meters from the villa.

* Please note: at certain times of the year the waves in Cape Verde can be quite large, therefore this can make bathing in the sea challenging. However this doesn’t normally last more than a day or two. Sometimes under these conditions the sand can shift quite dramatically. The small beach close to the villa usually has less sand June to November and conversely much more sand December to May. The main beach (Bitxe Rotxa) in Vila do Maio (8 min) and Ponta Preta beach (12 min) always have lots of sand.

The infinity pool is shared with the other owners and is close to, and visible from the house – just 20m away. It looks west over the ocean, so it is a lovely place to relax and watch the sunset. To the right of the pool is the little beach and just below the pool is a rocky ledge where you can go fishing or snorkeling depending on the sea conditions. If you are a strong swimmer and have fins it is possible to swim right round to the main beach to the right, or even up to another tiny beach to the left that can only be accessed from the sea. We suggest you only do this if the sea is calm though.

Enhancements

Each time a guest stays we ask how we can improve, or whether there is anything we can add. As a result we added: two additional beds for kids (mezzanine); a baby’s cot; fast unlimited wifi*; a smart TV; a bluetooth sound system; a large safe for  laptop; hammocks; sun loungers; a sun terrace; a beautiful private tropical garden; direct access to the pool; extra security. To the best of our knowledge no other accommodation offers all of these.

* Additional cost.

Amenities

Everything you need is within walking distance. The local supermarket is less than 5 min walk. The closest, and furthermore what we consider to be the best restaurant (Sebastian’s) is only 300m. The market with all the fresh fruit and vegetables is about 500m. The fish market is about 7 min walk on the main beach. All the other little shops and bars are within about 8 min walk. Transfer from the airport is about 15 min. You don’t need a car to get around, however you may choose to rent one and explore the island. Better still we would recommend taking an island tour with our guides, as they know the island well.

Cost of living

You can live inexpensively on Maio. Fresh fish can be bought daily from the beach for 300cve that is €2.20 a kilo. This includes tuna and serra steaks. Fresh fruit and vegetables can be bought at the market. Some things are less expensive than others. Locally grown things (potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, papayas, onions etc) are 200cve a kilo, but imported things like apples can be 400cve. Eating out is about 800cve for a main meal, but can even be as little as 200cve in a small budget place with one set dish. A nice bottle of wine from the local shop is about 400cve

What’s included

The price of your stay includes everything on the inventory (available on request). We put out 2 shower towels and 1 beach towel per person, but if you need more please ask. Also included is electricity, gas and water plus the essentials for the start of your holiday such as, water, soap, shower gel, washing up liquid, toilet paper.

Some guests prefer privacy, whilst others prefer a regular linen change, so if your stay is longer than one week, an additional weekly linen change can be requested at no extra cost. This can be arranged with the house manager on arrival.

Extra charges

Laundry for personal items is €8.5 for one wash (5kg).

You may also add a number of different activities (diving, fishing, island tours, massage etc) and unlimited super-fast WIFI Internet as optional extras.

Tax

Cape Verde Tourist Tax is payable by all adults over the age of 16. The cost is €2 per person per night to a maximum of 10 nights. This will be collected by the House Manager on arrival.

What to expect

It is important to note that most of CV is poor and in addition Maio is one of the poorest islands. With this in mind it is wise not to expect too much luxury. The house is nice and we have tried to supply everything you need, but outside life is simple. The locals live in stone houses often without glass windows or even a roof! The restaurants are fairly basic and there aren’t too many to choose from, however they serve good food. Also you won’t find masses of attractions like you would in a big tourist destination. However, what Maio lacks in ‘tourist’ things it certainly makes up for in its simple charms. However, Stella Maris Villa Maio is well equipped and comfortable.
